The distinction between East
Coast Transmedia and West Coast Transmedia lies in the underlying meaning of
identifying the “cultural difference created by different underlying industries
and mechanisms of productions (Jenkins, 2012).” The East Coast form of Transmedia is considered a different form of media
that represents the cultural influence found on the eastern coast of the United
States. While, the West Coast form of Transmedia represents various forms of
media that represent the western coast of the United States. The East Coast
represents the independent and live acts. On the other hand, the West Coast
represents the extremely influential Hollywood and the television industry.
Andrea Phillips came up with the distinction between East Coast Transmedia and
West Coast Transmedia. Andrea Phillips is the author of A Creator’s Guide to Transmedia
Storytelling: How to Captivate and Engage Audiences Across Multiple Platforms.
An example of West Coast Transmedia would be Indiana
Jones. This could be considered West Coast Transmedia because Indiana Jones has
large chunks of the story are being created into a movie, a television show, a
book, and a video game. An example of East Coast Transmedia would be the World
Wrestling Entertainment experience. The wrestling world includes live televised
matches. It also includes actors heading to social networks such as Twitter and
Youtube to showcase their abilities and to bash rivals and their competitors.
An example of a form of transmedia that is categorized as art for art's sake would be story “The
Village Girl and the Teenbot.” This is a great model because it is not a story
that has been made into a film or television show. It is merely for the
purposes of the author to express herself through her story by merging it to
other forms of media including a print and a chatbot. An example of story that is an example of transmedia campaigns
for marketing purposes would be the Game of Thrones. This was initially a
series of fantasy novels written by George RR Martin. HBO was launching a new
show and need to determine the most effective methods in raising viewership. To
do this, Campfire decided to launch a mini series of “interactive experiences
based around the five senses.” Both transmedia stories where launched in print.
However, a major television company resembling West Coast transmedia launched
“Game of Thrones”. While the other story was launched in print but resembled
the East Coast transmedia independent media forms.
