Cross media is considered a specific form of media that has
been dispersed over multiple media platforms utilizing a wide array of media platforms
that are readily available. Cross media is widespread in the entertainment and
gaming industry. Transmedia stories are unique storytelling devices that tell a
story experience across a variety of platforms and formats using the digital
formats. Transmedia stories apply creative approaches during the storytelling
process to be used in creative media platforms to provide imaginative parts of
the content in each media format. Cross media deals with a single story, whereas
transmedia stories deal with multiple story formats based off of one main story
or experience.
An example for a cross media
story is J.K. Rowling Harry Potter Series. Originally, Harry Potter was a series of seven fantasy
novels written by the British author J.K. Rowling. After much success,
popularity, and critical acclaim in the United States and in Europe, the series was transformed into a series of films. This is
considered an example of a cross media story because the novel series Harry
Potter was transferred into a different media platform, which was the film
format. This is an excellent example because the story was almost transferred
verbatim when it was changed into the film format. Harry Potter enthusiasts
were very accepting of the change in format and continued their interest in
Harry Potter in the movie theaters as each film mirrored the book series
precisely.
An example for a transmedia story is
James Bond 007. James Bond 007 began as twelve novels and two short story
series. As the success of the novels grew, the fictional character was adapted for multiple media platforms
such as television, radio, comic strip, video games, and film. Different story
experiences have been generated to express and further the adventures of James
Bond 007. This is a classic example of a transmedia story because this example
deals with creatively altering the single original story of James Bond 007 into
multiple story platforms or experiences.
Another type of transmedia story is an
Alternative Reality Game (ARG). An example of an ARG is the Lost Experience.
The Lost Experience ARG is derived from popular American the television show Lost. The purpose of this ARG was to
create another realm or experience that Lost
fanatics could engage in under a different but similar storytelling experience.
